If you’re reading this I assume that you have fairly extensive online experience. My guess is, that you have filled out many online forms which have both required and optional input fields. And no doubt, you have submitted one or more of those forms, only to have your screen refresh and identify the required fields which you either completed incorrectly or neglected to fill in. Of course, if only optional fields were left blank, the form would not have magically re-appeared!
We find in our Christian life that there are required and optional activities. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus identifies three required activities in the Christian life. We read the following phrases in this chapter:
- c. 6:3 when you give (doest alms)
- c. 6:5 when you pray
- c. 6:17 when you fast
Had Jesus used the word “if” to preface these statements, we could assume that these activities are optional. But, since Jesus used the word “when” to preface them, we must accept them as requirements. When we lay our heads down at night reviewing the day’s activities in our minds, does our mind’s screen refresh and highlight the fields in our day that were omitted? If so, fill out your life with the activities the Lord Jesus requires of us.
