There are several reasons banana Laffy Taffy is one of my favorite candies. First, I like bananas and I especially enjoy the banana flavor in Laffy Taffy. Second, I like the jokes that are printed on each piece of Laffy Taffy. Granted the jokes are really third grade material, so I guess that should tell me something! Third, I enjoy the length of time required for each bite to dissolve in my mouth. You’ve surely had the experience of eating taffy. You know it is difficult to chew because it sticks to your teeth. But, if rolled around in your mouth and squeezed between your lips a burst of flavor emerges with each movement. Laffy Taffy can be enjoyed for a long time.
There is a word in the bible that comes to mind when I think of savoring the Laffy Taffy flavor dissolving in my mouth: that word is meditate. The word meditate in its various forms is used mostly in the Old Testament. The most common Hebrew word translated meditate has several meanings. One of those is “mutter.” Muttering can have either a negative or positive connotation.
The positive connotation means to speak indistinctly in low tones. While muttering words remain on our lips. There is an endless stream of thoughts expressed through our mouths. Depending on the subject matter and our level of activity these thoughts may stay in our minds and on our lips for hours. They have the staying power of Laffy Taffy which may stick to our teeth and constantly produce flavors.
Depending on the thoughts we think and mutter they produce joy or anxiety in our lives. The bible instructs us in Joshua 1:8 that God’s Word should be in our mouths (muttering) day and night. When we obey this instruction God’s word will surely produce in and for us what He has promised.
