As Pastor Dick has been sharing the past two services on exposing the hidden works of the devil, it reminded me of something God dealt with me almost 11 years ago. As many of you know, I am a musician and addict to anything musical. I constantly have music on in the car, in my office and absolutely love it.
I used to listen to just about every single type of music that was out there from rap to hardcore metal. That addiction to music along with a rather well paying job with no responsibilities allowed me to purchase just about any and all CD’s I could ever want. I was asked by many why I listened to music that wasn’t lifting up God, and my response was always: “I just like the beats” or, “The words of the song don’t affect me, I am saved.” Until God dealt with me one Sunday morning about 11 years ago, after a message similar to the one this past Wednesday night, God starting dealing with me on the type of music I listened to.
I was struggling at that time with a few battles in my life and I would spend every week at church crying to God asking WHY?!? At that time, God spoke to me & said that if you want to overcome these battles I was facing, I had to give up things that were not of Him. So that Sunday afternoon after our morning service I drove home with tears in my eyes knowing what I had to do.
When I arrived at home I took all the CD’s I owned that were secular and not lifting up Jesus and headed to the garage. I stacked together around 65-75 CD’s and placed them into a vice. I then took a sledgehammer and smashed those CD’s to pieces. As tears streamed down my face, I felt the heaviness that had been on my life being lifted away.
I would be lying if that was the end of the story and I was instantly delivered and had no more temptations to listen to the music. But, I knew what I had to do and so I listened to the only Christian CD I owned over and over and over. I played that CD till it would barely work anymore. As this continued on, I found the battles I was facing slowly being defeated. From that day on, the only music I listen to is Christian based music and it has changed my life.
In closing, I leave you with this song which has ministered to me greatly over the past few years. It is a song by David Crowder titled: “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven, But Nobody Wants To Die.” We all want the blessings God promises us, but are we always willing to kill our flesh to achieve them? I hope that this song ministers to you as it has to me on many instances.
- James 4:17– If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20– Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
