Everyone enjoys receiving gifts. As we grow older we realize there is much greater enjoyment in seeing others enjoy the gifts we give them.
When our youngest daughter Lauren was about 5 or 6 years old we spent Christmas at my wife’s parent’s house in New Mexico. That year Lauren was going to receive her first bicycle courtesy of her grandparents. Finally the big day arrived. Since the bicycle was going to be Lauren’s premier gift it was presented to her last. When the time came her grandfather wheeled the bike into the living room where everyone was waiting expectantly for an ecstatic little girl with a beaming face. When Lauren saw her surprise gift she ran out of the room crying hysterically and locked herself in the bedroom. Wow, what enjoyment. Of course everyone was disappointed with the reaction, especially her grandparents. My wife finally coaxed the reason for Lauren’s response out of her: she said through her tears, “It’s the wrong color!”
You may be asking yourself, “How could she act that way?” On that Christmas day I asked myself that same question. Having greatly matured, Lauren is now a very grateful and thoughtful person.
Today, I ask the same question of myself and others who do not appreciate the things they have or receive from the Lord. The bible tells us in 1Timothy 6:17b that God has given us …richly all things to enjoy. Thankfully our God is not a Scrooge: He gives things to us richly (abundantly) and He gives those things for us to ENJOY!
Let’s all take a moment today and be grateful for what we have received from the Lord and truly enjoy them.
